CURIOUSCOPE ACQUIRES THE PUBLIC IMAGE IS ROTTEN FOR RELEASE IN JAPAN

FILM CHRONICLES MUSIC ICON JOHN LYDON AND THE EVOLUTION OF PUBLIC IMAGE LTD

Film will be available outside Japan on iTunes, Amazon, FandangoNow, and Xbox/Microsoft Store starting October 27 and on Google Play on November 3

NEW YORK, NY / TOKYO, JAPAN – October 27, 2020 – Abramorama today announced Curiouscope has acquired the Japanese rights to the well-received documentary The Public Image Is Rotten for release in 2021. The deal was negotiated on behalf of the filmmakers by Abramorama’s Head of Music Evan Saxon and COO Karol Martesko-Fenster, and on behalf of Curiouscope by Yukie Koga and CEO Ryo Ichimura. In addition, The Public Image Is Rotten will be released on digital platforms outside of Japan (English and French and Spanish subtitles) starting today October 27, 2020. It is also available via Abramorama’s direct-to-consumer imprint at vimeo.com/ondemand/publicimage. In 2019, The Public Image Is Rotten had a targeted global theatrical release with sold out Q&A screenings in London, NYC, Mexico City and Los Angeles. The theatrical campaign reinvigorated fans, introduced Lydon to a new audience and drove sales for a career spanning box set also titled “The Public Image Is Rotten.”

John Lydon commented, “This quote is not my quote.”

Abramorama’s Evan Saxon and Abramorama CEO Richard Abramowitz added, “John Lydon has changed music and pop culture like only the most challenging of artist’s have. The Public Image Is Rotten delivers an insightful look at John and PiL and should be seen by fans of all music. It’s a great doc on a groundbreaking band that’s lasted 40 years, still puts out great music, and gives fans the best live shows.”

Curiouscope’s CEO Ryo Ichimura stated, “We are pleased to distribute this great documentary in Japan, as John Lydon and PiL have been having a profound impact on the Japanese music and cultural scene. We know their story, music and creative integrity will inspire Japanese audiences.“

A The New York Times Critic’s Pick, The Times wrote “this affectionate and frank movie can elicit newfound admiration for a slightly mellowed iconoclast.” Directed by Tabbert Fiiller, featuring in-depth interviews with John Lydon, former and current bandmates as well as Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers), Ad-Rock (Beastie Boys) and Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth) and more, and loaded with electrifying archival footage, The Public Image Is Rotten tells the band and John Lydon’s story with a level of depth and intimacy never before seen.

After the breakup of the Sex Pistols, John Lydon (a.k.a. Johnny Rotten), formed Public Image Ltd (PiL), his groundbreaking band which he has kept alive for over four decades, through personnel and stylistic changes, fighting to constantly reinvent new ways of approaching music, while adhering to radical ideals of artistic integrity. John Lydon has not only redefined music, but also the true meaning of originality. With his trademark acerbic wit and unpredictable candor, Lydon offers a behind-the-scenes look at one of music’s most influential and controversial careers.
